Is AZ-802 worth it? Who should take it
AZ-802 is worth it if you administer Windows Server, on-premises or in Azure, and want a credential that says so. It is now the only exam that earns the Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Administrator Associate certification, it covers the work of that role closely, and one exam is cheaper and quicker than the two it replaces. It is less worth it if you already hold the Windows Server Hybrid Administrator certification, or if your work is mostly in Azure rather than on Windows Server.
Who it is for
Windows Server administrators. This is the core audience: AD DS, Group Policy, Hyper-V, DNS, DHCP, file services, hardening and troubleshooting are the job, and the exam tests them.
On-premises administrators moving to hybrid. The exam puts Azure Arc, Azure Update Manager, Azure Monitor and Windows Admin Center in the Azure portal next to the traditional tools. Studying for it is a structured way to learn how existing servers are run through Azure.
Infrastructure engineers at managed service providers. Customers still run Active Directory and file servers, and MSPs look for people who can manage them across on-premises and Azure.

Existing holders keep their certification under its new name. Taking AZ-802 anyway gains little and resets the expiry date to a year from the pass.

The main saving compared with the old route is obvious: one exam fee instead of two. The hidden cost is lab hardware. Nested Hyper-V labs need a machine with enough memory for four or five VMs, or you run the lab in Azure and pay by the hour.
What it proves
A pass shows that you can:
- deploy and run AD DS across sites, domains and forests, with Group Policy and managed service accounts;
- manage servers remotely and at scale with Windows Admin Center, PowerShell, Azure Arc and Update Manager;
- run Hyper-V and Azure VMs, including replication and secure access;
- manage DNS and DHCP for on-premises and hybrid networks;
- run file services from DFS and FSRM to Azure File Sync and Storage Spaces Direct;
- harden servers and AD, then monitor and troubleshoot them.
That is broad, practical coverage of Windows Server as it is run today. Because it is hands-on, it tells an employer more than a fundamentals certificate.
What it does not prove
It no longer covers failover clustering in depth, migration, containers, backup and disaster recovery, or hybrid identity synchronisation with Entra Connect, all of which were in the old exams. It does not cover Azure administration beyond Windows Server VMs. And like any associate certification, it opens a conversation rather than replacing experience.
Is it still relevant?
Yes. AZ-802 is Microsoft’s newest Windows Server exam, its study guide was last updated on 6 July 2026, and the exam page carries no retirement date. Windows Server and Active Directory remain the backbone of most corporate networks, and Microsoft’s own rename, from hybrid administrator to administrator, reflects that hybrid management is now simply part of the job.
The verdict
Take AZ-802 if you run Windows Server and do not already hold the certification. The study plan gets most working administrators there in four weeks. If you mainly work in the Azure portal, AZ-104 is the better fit.
