AZ-400 renewal and retake rules

Updated October 9, 2026

The DevOps Engineer Expert credential earned with AZ-400 is valid for one year and renews for free through an unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn that Microsoft says takes about 45 minutes. Two things set it apart from a plain associate renewal. It sits on top of a prerequisite credential that has its own separate expiry, and one of its two named prerequisites, Azure Developer Associate, is now retired. A failed AZ-400 exam can be retaken after 24 hours, with 14 days between later attempts. The career side is on the career page.

What the DevOps renewal assessment tests

Microsoft’s renewal page for this credential lists seven skills measured:

  1. Design and implement a pipeline strategy
  2. Implement Bicep
  3. Software Composition Analysis
  4. Plan Agile with GitHub Projects and Azure Boards
  5. Design and implement branch strategies and workflows
  6. Develop monitor and status dashboards
  7. Manage alerts, blameless retrospectives and a just culture

The page says the English version was last updated on August 6, 2025, with localized versions following about three weeks later. As fetched on 2026-10-09 the page had not yet been republished after the AZ-400 exam outline of July 27, 2026, although Microsoft’s FAQ says renewal assessments are aligned with exam updates. Check the list in your own profile when the window opens.

The window and the clock

All role-based credentials expire one year after you complete the requirements. The assessment opens six months before expiry, expiry times are in UTC, and passing extends the credential by one year from the existing expiration date, not from the day you pass. You cannot renew earlier than the window, and you cannot renew by retaking the exam or by passing a beta exam. Microsoft states there are no exceptions.

Attempts at the assessment are unlimited. After a first failure you can try again at once; after the second try, at least 24 hours between attempts. Microsoft recommends finishing well before expiry in case of technical trouble.

Two credentials, two clocks

Microsoft’s FAQ answers the stacked-credential question directly: if the associate-level prerequisite expires, the expert-level certification does not automatically expire, and each certification is renewed separately with its own assessment. For a DevOps engineer that means a calendar with two dates, one for Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) and one for the expert credential. Microsoft does not publish whether the prerequisite must be active on the day you pass AZ-400, so check your profile before booking if the associate is near expiry.

The retired Azure Developer Associate

The DevOps page still names Azure Developer Associate as an accepted prerequisite. That certification’s own page carries a warning that “this certification and the renewal assessment are retired”. Microsoft’s credential expiration policy adds that a retired credential stays in the Active section of the transcript until it expires. So a holder who earned the developer credential before retirement keeps it until its last expiry date, and cannot renew it. After that, the practical prerequisite is the administrator associate. Microsoft’s FAQ on retirement also says renewal windows can be shortened for retiring certifications, and that a retirement date earlier than the expiry date means you must renew before the retirement.

If your AZ-400 credential expires

Once expired, the credential can no longer be renewed. You must pass the required exam again, which here means AZ-400 plus the prerequisite requirement. That is also the only case where a passed exam may be retaken: Microsoft says you cannot retake a passed exam unless the certification has expired.

Retake limits for the AZ-400 exam

SituationRule
After a first failWait 24 hours
Later attempts14 days between each, up to five
CapFive attempts in 12 months from the first attempt; after five fails, eligible again 12 months from the first attempt
FeePay again, where a fee applies
Waiting-period waiverOnly for internet or equipment failure with a Pearson VUE case number

The retake policy is the same for Microsoft’s other role-based exams. The AZ-400 exam page lists no retirement date for the exam and shows “Related exams: none”. Price is set by country or region at booking, and the exam page offers a link to request accommodations. For the exam itself see exam format, and for outline changes across exams the exam changes page.
