Is AZ-400 worth it? Who should take it
AZ-400 is worth it if you build and operate delivery pipelines on Azure or GitHub, or you want a recognised credential for that work. It is Microsoft’s expert certification for the DevOps engineer role, and it covers the work of that role: source control, pipelines, deployments, infrastructure as code, security scanning and monitoring. It is less worth it if your work is mostly application code with no involvement in delivery, or pure infrastructure design.
Who it is for
DevOps and platform engineers. This is the core audience. The exam describes a developer or infrastructure administrator who enables continuous delivery in a cross-functional team with developers, site reliability engineers, Azure administrators and security engineers.
Developers who own their pipelines. If you already write YAML pipelines and manage releases, AZ-400 turns that into a credential.
Azure administrators moving into automation. If you hold AZ-104, AZ-400 is a natural next step, and you already hold the required associate certification.
Release and quality engineers. The traceability, testing and gating objectives apply directly.
Who should pick something else
| If you | Consider instead |
|---|---|
| Design Azure infrastructure from business requirements | AZ-305 |
| Run Azure resources day to day | AZ-104 |
| Secure cloud workloads and AI | SC-500 |

The prerequisite
Microsoft’s certification page says the DevOps Engineer Expert credential requires AZ-400 plus at least one of Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate. The Azure Developer Associate certification and its renewal assessment are marked retired on Microsoft Learn, so a new candidate should plan on Azure Administrator Associate. That adds the cost and time of AZ-104 if you do not hold it. See prerequisites and exam tips.
What it costs
| Cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Exam fee | Set per country or region; shown when you book |
| Retake | Full fee again; retake after 24 hours at the earliest, then 14 days between later attempts |
| Renewal | Free, annually, through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn |
| Practice assessment | Free on Microsoft Learn |
| Lab costs | Low: free Azure DevOps organization and GitHub account, small Azure budget |
| Study time | About four weeks if you already build pipelines |
See certification costs for how this compares with other credentials. The free annual renewal is a real advantage.
What it proves
A pass shows that you can:
- plan work and keep code, bugs and releases traceable;
- choose and enforce a branching strategy with policies and protection rules;
- build multi-stage pipelines in Azure Pipelines and GitHub Actions, with templates, tests, approvals and sensible agents;
- pick a deployment strategy to fit a rollback or exposure requirement and deploy infrastructure as code;
- keep secrets out of code and use federated or managed identities;
- instrument what you deploy and read basic telemetry.
It does not prove depth in one language or one cloud service, and it is not a substitute for a track record of running production releases.
A fair verdict
Take AZ-400 if the role description above matches your work and you already hold, or will earn, the associate prerequisite. The exam is weighted toward practical pipeline skill, so preparation also makes you better at the job. If you are still deciding, take the free practice test and see how comfortable the scenarios feel.
