Is AZ-305 worth it? Who should take it

Updated October 9, 2026

AZ-305 is worth it if you design, advise on or lead Azure solutions, or if you already hold AZ-104 and want the certification that represents the architect role. It leads to the Azure Solutions Architect Expert credential, which Microsoft describes as the role of advising stakeholders and translating business requirements into Azure designs. It is less worth it if you mainly build pipelines or write application code, where other exams fit better.

Who it is for

Azure administrators moving up. If you have passed AZ-104 and your work now involves choosing services and shaping designs, AZ-305 is the natural next step. The overlap with AZ-104 is large; see AZ-104 vs AZ-305.

Solution architects and consultants. The audience profile describes people who advise stakeholders and translate business requirements into designs aligned with the Azure Well-Architected Framework and the Cloud Adoption Framework. If that is your job, the exam reflects it.

Cloud engineers on migration or landing-zone projects. The exam covers migration planning, governance structure, networking and recovery, which are the decisions those projects involve.

Pre-sales and technical account staff. Partner roles often value expert-level certifications. Check your programme’s current requirements, since they change.

Exam feeSet per country or region; shown at booking
RetakeFull fee again, after Microsoft’s waiting period
RenewalFree, annually, through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn
Practice assessmentFree on Microsoft Learn
Lab spendLow; the study plan uses design exercises and short deployments

Plan for the prerequisite cost when you budget: the expert certification needs both exams. See certification costs for how Microsoft exam pricing varies.

What it proves

A pass shows that you can recommend:

  • how to structure identity, governance and monitoring across an estate;
  • which data services and tiers fit a workload;
  • how to meet recovery objectives with backup, replication and high availability;
  • which compute, messaging, API, caching and network services to combine;
  • how to plan and assess a migration.

Because it is a design exam, it demonstrates judgement across many services rather than configuration skill in one.

What it does not prove

It does not prove you can configure and operate a resource by hand, which is what AZ-104 tests. It does not cover pipeline engineering, which is AZ-400. And no certification replaces a design you have delivered. In an interview, an architecture you can draw, defend and describe the trade-offs of will carry more weight than the badge.

Is it still relevant?

Yes. The English outline was updated on April 17, 2026, and the exam page shows no retirement date. Microsoft requires an Azure Administrator Associate certification for the expert credential, and the certification renews free each year, which keeps it current. Review exam changes for how updates affect study material.

The verdict

Take AZ-305 if you hold AZ-104 and your work involves designing or advising on Azure solutions. Use the study plan and the prerequisites page to check you have the foundation. If your work is mostly delivery pipelines, start with AZ-400. If you are unsure whether the effort fits your plans, compare the exam format with how much time you can commit over four weeks.
