Identity, governance and monitoring

RequirementAnswer
Workload needs Azure access, no secret to manageManaged identity
Store secrets, keys, certificatesKey Vault
Partners sign in with their own accountsB2B guests
Customers sign up with social accountsExternal identity service for customers
Publish an on-premises web app without a VPNEntra application proxy
Just-in-time admin rightsPrivileged Identity Management
Periodic recertification of accessAccess reviews
Controls inherited by many subscriptionsManagement group + Azure Policy
Block non-compliant deploymentsPolicy, Deny effect
Query logs across resourcesLog Analytics workspace
Stream logs to a SIEMDiagnostic setting to Event Hubs

Data

RequirementAnswer
SQL Server lift and shift, full compatibilitySQL Managed Instance
New app, managed relationalAzure SQL Database
Many databases, uneven peaksElastic pool
Intermittent load, pay lessServerless compute tier
Global, low-latency NoSQLCosmos DB
Raw analytics data with foldersData Lake Storage Gen2
Hybrid file serverAzure Files + Azure File Sync
Rarely read, long retentionArchive tier + immutability policy
Scheduled data movementData Factory
Streaming ingestionEvent Hubs

Redundancy and recovery

Failure to surviveChoice
Disk or rackLRS
DatacenterZRS or availability zones
RegionGRS or GZRS
Read secondary during outageRA-GRS or RA-GZRS
Regional SQL failover, same endpointFailover group
VM regional DRSite Recovery
Restore points for VMs and filesRecovery Services vault
Restore points for disks and blobsBackup vault
Accidental deletion or overwriteSoft delete, versioning, backup

Replication copies mistakes too. Backup is what saves you from deletion and corruption.

Compute and application

RequirementAnswer
Full OS control, lift and shiftVMs / scale sets
Web app, managedApp Service
Containers, scale to zero, no Kubernetes adminContainer Apps
Full Kubernetes controlAKS
Event-triggered code, pay per runFunctions
Many independent tasks, cheapBatch (Spot VMs)
Ordered, reliable messages, dead-letterService Bus
React to eventsEvent Grid
High-volume streamsEvent Hubs
Publish and throttle APIsAPI Management
Reduce read latency and DB loadCache for Redis
Central settings and feature flagsApp Configuration

Migration and network

RequirementAnswer
Discover and assess serversAzure Migrate
Database migration, low downtimeDatabase Migration Service (online)
Huge offline data transferData Box
Encrypted tunnel over internetVPN Gateway
Private dedicated linkExpressRoute
Many branches, transitive routingVirtual WAN
Private IP to a PaaS servicePrivate endpoint
Regional layer 7 + WAFApplication Gateway
Global layer 7 + WAFFront Door
DNS-based global routingTraffic Manager
Regional layer 4Load Balancer

Common traps

  • Peering is not transitive.
  • Service endpoint is not private endpoint.
  • Traffic Manager has no WAF and no TLS offload.
  • Availability set protects inside one datacenter; zones protect across datacenters.
  • Geo-replication is not backup.
  • “Minimal management” moves you toward PaaS; “OS access” moves you toward VMs.
