AZ-305 career: architect roles, next steps

Updated October 9, 2026

AZ-305 leads to solution architect work on Azure: the person who advises stakeholders and turns business requirements into designs. Microsoft files the Azure Solutions Architect Expert credential under one role tag, “Solution Architect”, at expert level, and the credential is made of two parts: the Azure Administrator Associate certification plus a pass on AZ-305. This page covers the jobs that wording points at, what the expert badge does and does not show, and what usually follows. For the decision to sit the exam at all, see Is AZ-305 worth it?.

The Solution Architect role as Microsoft words it

The certification page describes subject matter expertise in “designing cloud and hybrid solutions that run on Azure”, across compute, network, storage, monitoring and security. Two details in that text matter for job hunting.

First, the responsibilities are advisory: advising stakeholders and aligning designs with the Azure Well-Architected Framework and the Cloud Adoption Framework for Azure. Second, the architect “implements solutions on Azure by partnering with” four other roles: developers, administrators, security engineers and data engineers. The architect sits between those teams, not above them.

Titles that match this description in practice, as common market labels rather than a Microsoft list:

  • Cloud solution architect or Azure solutions architect
  • Cloud architect on a migration or landing-zone programme
  • Technical architect or consulting architect at an integrator or Microsoft partner
  • Pre-sales or customer-facing solution architect
  • Senior cloud engineer who owns design decisions for a platform team

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not have an Azure occupation. Its nearest neighbour, computer network architects, designs data communication networks and is described as typically needing several years of experience, often as a network or systems administrator. That experience pattern matches the way this credential is built. The same page is the place to check pay and outlook; this site quotes no figures.

Why the expert badge has an associate underneath

The unusual feature of this credential is its composition. AZ-305 itself carries no booking prerequisite, but Microsoft states that to become an Azure Solutions Architect Expert you must earn the Azure Administrator Associate certification. In career terms the architect badge therefore certifies two things at once: that you can operate an Azure estate (the AZ-104 half, see AZ-104 career) and that you can design one.

Microsoft also expects, for AZ-305, “advanced experience and knowledge of IT operations” including networking, virtualization, identity, security, business continuity, disaster recovery, data platforms and governance, plus experience in Azure administration, Azure development and DevOps processes. Few people reach that list in under several years of project work, which is why the exam is a poor first Azure credential and a reasonable second or third.

What the AZ-305 badge does not prove

  • A delivered design. The exam asks you to recommend among options for a stated requirement. It cannot show that you defended a design to a sceptical customer or lived through its operating costs.
  • Pipeline engineering. Release automation and source control belong to AZ-400; the comparison is in AZ-305 vs AZ-400.
  • Security architecture depth. Identity and governance are a domain here, but security engineering has its own exam, SC-500.
  • Data platform depth. Storage design is covered; building analytics or Fabric workloads is the territory of DP-600 and DP-700.
  • Currency. The credential must be renewed each year; see renewal and retakes.

Decision table: what to add after AZ-305

None of these is required. Microsoft’s own page lists only the administrator associate as a dependency, and it names no follow-on certification.

Reading the market without quoting numbers

Job adverts rarely say “AZ-305”; they ask for an architecture portfolio, a named Azure specialisation or a partner-programme badge. Treat the certification as proof that you know the Azure service catalogue and the Well-Architected vocabulary, and bring one design you can draw from memory. For current pay and demand, use the BLS page above rather than a blog’s headline number. The Azure administrator-to-architect path shows how the two exams fit together, and useful links lists the official sources.
