AIF-C01 renewal and retake rules

Updated October 9, 2026

AWS Certified AI Practitioner is valid for three years. You renew it by passing the latest AIF-C01 exam, the Machine Learning Engineer Associate exam or the Generative AI Developer Professional exam. If you fail, you wait 14 calendar days and pay the full fee again, with no limit on attempts. Both rules come from AWS’s recertification page and after-testing policy.

The three-year clock and what restarts it

AWS’s recertification page lists exactly three renewal routes for AI Practitioner, each giving three more years:

RouteWhat you takeNotes
Same examThe latest version of AIF-C01Usable with the 50% discount voucher from your AWS Certification Account
Associate step-upThe latest version of the ML Engineer Associate exam (MLA-C02)You gain a higher credential at the same time
Professional step-upThe latest version of the Generative AI Developer Professional examHighest route

Two details matter. First, AWS says that “certification must be active to renew”, so renewal is for a credential that has not yet lapsed. Second, the new time runs from the date you complete the renewal action, not from the old expiry date. AWS’s page says time is extended “based on the date of completion of that recertification action”. So renewing a year early does not stack the leftover year on top; you simply restart the three-year clock.

AWS does not describe, on the recertification page, what happens to the credential after expiry or whether there is a grace period. Treat the expiry date as a hard deadline and renew before it. Your expiry date appears in your AWS Certification Account.

How this differs from other AWS credentials

AWS Cloud Practitioner has a free game-based route (AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner) and a Skill Builder “maintain” route that adds one year. The recertification page lists no such non-exam route for AI Practitioner. For this credential the only way to extend validity is to pass an exam, and passing a higher-level one is the sole alternative. That matters for budgeting: renewal costs an exam fee (the current price is 100 USD, minus whatever the discount voucher covers), not a free module.

The step-up logic is also specific. AWS’s list says the Data Engineer Associate and ML Engineer Associate credentials can themselves be renewed by the Generative AI Developer Professional exam, so one professional pass could cover several lower credentials. If you plan that path, see the career page and the AWS AI path.

Retake rules for AIF-C01

AWS’s after-testing policy sets the rules for every AWS exam, and they apply here unchanged:

  • Waiting period: “If you fail an exam, you must wait 14 calendar days before you are eligible to retake the exam.”
  • Attempt limit: “There is no limit on exam attempts.”
  • Fee: you “must pay the full registration fee for each exam attempt”. The policy page does not state a retake discount.
  • After a pass: you cannot retake the same exam for two years. In practice this means an identical-exam renewal only makes sense late in the three-year cycle. AWS does not say on that page whether the two-year block also applies to the step-up exams.
  • Beta exams: a beta exam can be taken only once, then you wait for the general release.

Score report and support

The passing standard for AWS Foundational exams is a scaled score of 700 out of a 100 to 1,000 range, as the exam format page explains. Results post to your AWS Certification Account within five business days, unless under review. You download the score report as a PDF from the Exam History table. AWS notes that section-level feedback should be read with caution.

AWS also states that reasonable accommodations are granted for documented disabilities, and that they must be requested before scheduling each exam. Non-native English speakers can request a 30-minute extension once through their AWS Certification Account, and it applies to later registrations. The pre-testing policy page gives these rules. AWS does not publish an appeals process on those policy pages.

Exam guide 1.1 and the October 2026 language retirement

The AIF-C01 exam guide itself moved from version 1.0 (26 March 2026) to version 1.1 (30 April 2026). AWS says exam guide updates are published about one month before they appear on the exam. If a new guide and series code are released, you may take the new version. This is why “the latest version” in the renewal wording matters: a renewal attempt in 2029 may not match today’s outline.

Language availability also changes. AWS states that the AI Practitioner exam in Italian and German will be retired after 15 October 2026. If you planned to sit or renew in either language, book before that date or switch to another of the offered languages, which include English, Arabic, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), both Spanish versions and both Chinese versions.
