AIF-C01 is the AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam: AWS’s foundational certification for people who use AI and machine learning on AWS without necessarily building it. AWS describes the target candidate as having up to six months of exposure to AI/ML on AWS.
The scope statement is unusually explicit, and it is the most useful thing to read before you start. AWS states that the following are out of scope: developing or coding models, data or feature engineering, hyperparameter tuning, building AI/ML pipelines, statistical analysis of models, implementing security protocols, and developing governance frameworks.
In other words: you must know what these things are and when they apply. You are not expected to do any of them.
What the exam covers
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Fundamentals of AI and ML | 20% |
| Fundamentals of GenAI | 24% |
| Applications of Foundation Models | 28% |
| Guidelines for Responsible AI | 14% |
| Security, Compliance, and Governance for AI Solutions | 14% |
Generative AI dominates. Domains 2 and 3 together are 52% of the scored content — more than half the exam is about foundation models, how they work and how they are applied. Classic AI and ML fundamentals account for 20%, and the two governance-flavoured domains 14% each.
Where to start
Read the exam format first — the scoring model has a detail worth knowing. Then the study plan, which follows the weighting rather than the domain order.
