AI-901 study scenarios: three profiles

Updated October 9, 2026

How to study for AI-901 depends mostly on whether you can already read Python. It is a fundamentals exam in name, with a scaled 700-out-of-1000 pass mark and only two skill areas, but 55 to 60% of the score sits in implementing AI solutions with Microsoft Foundry and Microsoft’s audience profile assumes Python syntax and familiarity with REST APIs, SDKs and CLIs.

Example profiles, not real people. The profiles below are illustrative planning examples built from the official exam outline. They are not reviews or reports of anyone’s result.

The study plan assumes 5 to 7 hours a week for four weeks, about 20 to 28 hours, with a deliberate switch from reading in week one to hands-on work after it. The profiles below show who needs more.

The business professional with no coding background

Starting point. Understands the business use of AI and may already know the responsible AI principles. Cannot yet read a twenty-line Python script.

Where the time goes. First into closing the Python gap, then into Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry (55 to 60%), because the concepts area (40 to 45%) is the part this profile can already revise from notes.

The trap. Studying only the concepts, which feels comfortable, and then meeting a code snippet that wraps an HTTP call and returns structured data. The prerequisites page describes a gap of about a week of evenings on variables, functions, imports and JSON.

Order. Python basics, then the Foundry portal (deploy, prompt, agent), then the four implementation areas, then concepts and responsible AI last.

Planning assumption. A reasonable planning assumption is about 30 hours: 6 on Python, 14 on implementation, 7 on concepts and 3 on practice exams.

The developer who codes but has no AI vocabulary

Starting point. Reads Python and calls APIs routinely. Has not met responsible AI as a graded topic or the workload vocabulary of text analysis, speech, vision and information extraction.

Where the time goes. The concepts area (40 to 45%), which is mostly terminology: matching a scenario to one of the six responsible AI principles, choosing a model by capability, and naming the workload that fits.

The trap. Under-preparing the concepts because the code feels easy. The principle-matching questions are scenario-based, and a developer who has never studied fairness or transparency formally can lose a large share of one area.

Order. Foundry portal and a small SDK client first (quick wins), then the concepts area with a one-page sheet, then Content Understanding and Speech.

Planning assumption. A reasonable planning assumption is 20 to 24 hours, with about 9 on concepts, 9 on implementation and the rest on practice.

The AI-900 holder using old notes

Starting point. Remembers the five describe domains of the retired exam, which Microsoft retired on June 30, 2026. Holds knowledge of classic services such as language and vision.

Where the time goes. The implementation area. AI-900 asked you to describe things; AI-901 asks you to recognise correct code and the portal step that produces a given result.

The trap. Assuming the exam is a renumbering. The structure changed from five domains to two, and the larger one is hands-on, so notes alone leave more than half the score unprepared.

Order. Read what changed from AI-900, then go straight to Foundry for a deployment, an agent and a Content Understanding run, with a light concepts refresh at the end.

Planning assumption. A reasonable planning assumption is 20 to 25 hours, with about two thirds in the implementation area.

Which AI-901 profile fits before you book

Two quick tests. Read a short Python example that calls a deployed model, and say what it returns. Then name the six responsible AI principles and match a scenario to each. The first tests the implementation half and the second the concepts half.

Because the score report has only two bars, a weakness has nowhere to hide, so use the same split in practice. Take the free sample questions, run a timed practice test, and read the exam format for the mechanics.
