AI-901 study resources

Updated September 20, 2026

AI-901 is the exam where free official material genuinely suffices. The Microsoft Learn path for it covers the syllabus, and paying for a course is hard to justify. What people underestimate is how much a couple of hours clicking through Azure AI Foundry improves recall of material they have only read.

Start with the official material

The skills outline. Two skill areas only: identifying AI concepts and capabilities, and implementing AI solutions with Microsoft Foundry. Well over half the weight sits in the second, which tells you where to spend your time.

Microsoft Learn. The fundamentals path is free, short, and written to the outline. For an exam at this level it is close to sufficient on its own.

Why hands-on still helps

This is a conceptual exam with no coding, so it is tempting to read only. That is a mistake for a specific reason: many questions ask which capability fits a scenario, and capabilities blur together when you have only read their names.

An hour in Azure AI Foundry — sending a prompt, changing the temperature and watching the output vary, running a document through extraction, trying speech to text — makes those distinctions concrete. You do not need to build anything. You need to have seen each capability do its thing once.

The free tier covers this comfortably.

Worth paying for

Honestly, very little.

A practice test is the one defensible purchase, and only for the diagnostic value. Start with the free 20-question test here. If you score sixteen or more cold, book the exam — further study would be wasted.

Nothing else. For a fundamentals exam with free official coverage, paid video courses mostly repackage Microsoft Learn at a slower pace.

What to skip

Braindumps, for the same reasons as every exam: terms violation, revocation risk, and they teach recognition rather than understanding.

Deep technical material. People over-prepare this exam badly. You do not need to understand transformer architecture, write Python, or know service pricing. Reading an advanced course because it is thorough wastes weeks.

Old material referencing the previous structure. AI-901 was restructured around Microsoft Foundry. Material predating that covers services under different framing.

A sensible order

  1. Read the skills outline and note that the Foundry area is well over half the exam.
  2. Work through the Microsoft Learn fundamentals path.
  3. Spend an hour in Azure AI Foundry touching each capability once.
  4. Take the practice test.
  5. Review whichever of the two skill areas scored worse. There are only two, so this is quick.

Is it worth taking at all?

If you already build AI systems, no — go to AI-103 and skip this. The Azure AI certification path sets out who should take which.

If you work near AI without building it, this is a well-designed exam that gives you real vocabulary for a modest amount of effort.
