Agentforce Specialist prerequisites: first steps
The Agentforce Specialist exam has no enforced prerequisite: you can book it without holding another Salesforce certification. Salesforce does describe the candidate it has in mind, with roughly a year of Salesforce platform configuration experience including Data 360, plus hands-on work in Agentforce Agent Builder and Prompt Builder. This page turns that into concrete topics so you can see what to learn first, then move on to the study plan.
What Salesforce says
The exam guide’s candidate profile, as summarised on the hub page, says the candidate has about one year of Salesforce platform configuration experience, including Data 360, and hands-on experience building agents in Agent Builder and prompt templates in Prompt Builder. The audience is administrators, developers and architects.
Salesforce recommends, but does not require, the Platform Administrator and Platform App Builder certifications. The exam format page repeats that no prerequisite is enforced.
The background that helps
Platform configuration
You should be comfortable with standard objects and fields, page layouts, permission sets, flows and the difference between declarative and code-based customisation. Agent actions often wrap a flow or a prompt template, so knowing how a flow takes inputs and returns outputs makes the AI agents guide much easier to follow.
Security and sharing
Profiles, permission sets, field-level security and sharing rules. Agents act on behalf of a user or a service identity, so access questions come back to these basics.
Data 360 vocabulary
Data 360 is 20% of the exam. Before you study it, know what a data source, a unified profile and a data model are in general terms. The Data 360 guide starts from there.
Prompts, in plain terms
Writing a clear instruction for a language model, adding merge fields to ground it in record data, and checking the output. Prior use of any AI chat tool is enough to start; the prompt engineering guide covers Salesforce’s tooling.
A place to practise
A Developer Edition or sandbox with Agentforce enabled. The study plan assumes you have one.
What you do not need
Salesforce lists topics that are out of scope, and the exam also does not demand code.
| You do not need | Why |
|---|---|
| LLM configuration or fine-tuning | Listed as out of scope |
| Apex or Python | Listed as out of scope |
| Transformer architecture | Listed as out of scope |
| External AI tools | Listed as out of scope |
| ROI calculations | Listed as out of scope |
| Marketing Cloud, Heroku, MuleSoft, Tableau, Slack, Quip, Industry solutions | Listed as out of scope |
| Another certification | No prerequisite is enforced |
Quick self-check
- Can I build a simple flow and explain its inputs and outputs?
- Do I know how a permission set differs from a profile?
- Have I opened Agent Builder or Prompt Builder in an org?
- Can I explain what grounding a prompt in record data means?
- Do I know roughly what Data 360 does with data from several sources?
Mostly “yes”: begin the plan at week one. Mostly “no” on one to three means a week or two of Trailhead basics and an org first. “No” on four and five is normal, since the plan teaches them.
