AB-731 renewal and retake rules
Microsoft does not state on the AB-731 pages whether the AI Transformation Leader credential expires. What it does publish is a rule by level: associate, expert and specialty certifications are valid for one year, and fundamentals certifications do not expire. AB-731 is labelled “Beginner”, which is neither of those words, so the expiry term is not confirmed by an official AB-731 statement. The retake rules are clear: 24 hours after a first failure, then 14 days between later attempts, with a maximum of five attempts in 12 months. For career context see AB-731 career.
Does AB-731 expire? What is confirmed and what is not
Microsoft’s credential expiration policy says role-based (associate and expert) and specialty certifications last one year from the date all requirements are met, and that fundamentals certifications do not expire. Microsoft’s AB-731 certification page lists the level as Beginner, the role as Business Leader, and says nothing about an expiry date or a renewal assessment. Its study guide says only that associate, expert and specialty certifications expire annually.
| Source | What it says about AB-731 |
|---|---|
| Certification page | Level: Beginner. No expiry or renewal statement |
| Study guide (skills as of July 22, 2026) | Generic note on annual renewal for associate, expert and specialty; no AB-731 term |
| Expiration policy | Fundamentals do not expire; role-based and specialty last one year |
The honest reading is that Microsoft has not published an AB-731-specific term. The reliable check is the credential itself: sign in to Microsoft Learn, open your profile, choose Certifications, and look for an expiration date on the AI Transformation Leader entry. If a date is shown, a blue Renew button appears in the six months before it. If no date is shown, nothing needs renewing. The same site guide, exam format, already notes this uncertainty.
If an AB-731 renewal date does appear in Learn
Microsoft’s renewal FAQ describes the mechanism for credentials that do expire:
- the renewal assessment is free, online, unproctored and open book;
- it opens six months before the expiry date and cannot be taken earlier;
- passing extends the certification by one year from the expiration date, and the new date shows on the Learn profile immediately;
- a failed attempt can be repeated at once; after the second try there is a wait of at least 24 hours, and the number of attempts is unlimited;
- it is the only route: passing a beta exam or retaking the exam does not renew a certification;
- if a certification expires, it must be earned again by passing the exam, and it can no longer be renewed.
Those rules apply to Microsoft’s renewable certifications in general, so they are the same ones that hold for exams such as AZ-104. Whether they ever apply to AB-731 is the open question above.
AB-731 retakes: 24 hours, then 14 days, five attempts
The retake policy for role-based, specialty and fundamentals exams, which is the group that covers a proctored 45-minute exam like this one, reads as follows.
| Attempt | Wait before it |
|---|---|
| Second | 24 hours after the first |
| Third to fifth | 14 days after the previous attempt |
| Sixth | Not allowed within 12 months of the first attempt |
Other published conditions:
- Each attempt is paid in full where an exam fee applies. AB-731 is priced per country or region, shown at booking, so the cost of a retake is the local price again.
- After five failures, the next attempt is possible 12 months after the date of the first attempt.
- A passed exam cannot be retaken unless the certification has expired. For AB-731 that means a pass cannot simply be repeated to improve a score.
- The waiting period can be waived only after an internet or equipment failure with a Pearson VUE case number. No other reason qualifies.
Reading the AB-731 score bars before a retake
Microsoft’s scoring page says most results arrive within minutes, and the score is on the Learn profile within 24 hours. The report has an overall score, pass or fail, and a bar chart per skill area. It does not show a number per section and does not reveal which questions were wrong. For AB-731 the three bars correspond to business value (35-40%), Microsoft AI apps and services (35-40%) and adoption strategy (20-25%). A short bar in one of the two large areas is the strongest signal for retake revision; a weak adoption bar costs fewer marks but is the quickest to repair. The 14-day gap before a third attempt is long enough for a focused pass through the matching explainer, such as the adoption guide.
July 22, 2026 outline change: what it means for AB-731 holders
Microsoft updated the AB-731 skills measured on July 22, 2026, with minor changes to the audience profile, the Foundry Tools objectives and the adoption planning objectives. The study guide also says localized exams follow about eight weeks after the English version. For someone who already holds the credential, an outline update does not remove it: Microsoft’s policy says that retirement of a credential leaves a non-expiring one in the Active section of the transcript for two years. No AB-731 retirement has been announced on the pages read. The exam changes page tracks later updates, and the certification costs page puts retake fees into a wider budget.
