AB-731 prerequisites: what you need first
AB-731 has no formal prerequisite: Microsoft’s pages do not require another certification or exam first. What Microsoft does state is a recommended background: experience leading adoption or change management in a business context, and familiarity with Microsoft 365 services, Microsoft Foundry and general AI capabilities. You are not expected to write any code.
What the audience profile says
Microsoft describes the candidate as a business decision-maker at any level who guides transformation and innovation in a team or organisation. The expected abilities are AI fluency, strategic vision and the ability to lead AI adoption across functions. In practice, that means the following background helps most.
| Background | Why it helps | If you lack it |
|---|---|---|
| Leading change or adoption | Half the exam is about adoption, barriers and governance | Read the adoption guide and think about a past project |
| Using Microsoft 365 | Copilot is built into the apps you must recognise | Spend an hour in Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook with Copilot |
| General AI awareness | The business value domain assumes basic terms | Study the business value guide |
| Budget and ROI thinking | Questions ask about cost drivers and licence models | Practise with tokens and licence rules |
A five-question self-check
- Can you explain in one sentence the difference between a model that predicts and a model that generates?
- Do you know what a prompt is and why wording changes the result?
- Can you say why a chatbot might give a wrong answer with great confidence?
- Could you name three reasons a new tool fails to be adopted by a team?
- Do you know what Teams, Outlook, SharePoint and OneDrive are used for?
Stuck on two or more? Spend a week on plain AI and Microsoft 365 basics first, then follow the four-week study plan. Stuck on none? Go to the exam format.
If you are technical
Developers and IT administrators sometimes assume this exam is easy. The technical content is light, but the questions are about business reasoning: cost, risk, people and process. Practise answering as a leader. If your aim is technical AI knowledge, AI-901 is the better fit; for administration of Copilot in a tenant, see AB-900.
Where it leads
Microsoft’s exam page lists no further required exams after AB-731, and this exam is not a prerequisite for others. Many people pair it with AB-730 to cover both leadership and hands-on use. For the strategic comparison, read AB-731 versus AB-730.
How long should I allow?
| Starting point | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Change leader who already uses Copilot | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Manager new to AI but comfortable with Microsoft 365 | 4 weeks |
| Little AI or Microsoft 365 exposure | 5 to 6 weeks |
These are planning figures, not Microsoft guidance. The quickest way to find your own number is to take the free sample questions cold and see which area scores lowest. See the exam tips for how to read scenario questions once you start practising.
