Is AB-731 hard? Difficulty explained
AB-731 is moderate for most business leaders: it needs no coding and the content is broad rather than deep, but the scenario wording and look-alike Microsoft products catch people who skim. Microsoft rates the level as Beginner. For someone who already leads change and has used Copilot, four weeks of part-time study is a reasonable plan; for someone new to AI, allow five or six. Microsoft publishes no pass rate, so any figure you see is a guess.
What makes it easier
- No code. The audience profile says candidates are not expected to write any.
- Short. 45 minutes keeps questions compact.
- Conceptual. Verbs are identify, understand, explain and establish.
- Business-led. If you have run a rollout, many adoption scenarios will feel familiar.
- Three skill areas only. The outline fits on a couple of pages.
What makes it harder
| Source of difficulty | Detail |
|---|---|
| Plausible distractors | Several options are true; one is the best fit for the constraint |
| Product naming | Copilot Chat, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, Foundry and Foundry Tools sound alike |
| Vocabulary precision | RAG versus fine-tuning, grounding, tokens, fabrications |
| Broad scope | From ML lifecycle to AI councils in one paper |
| Changing names | Microsoft has renamed products; older material may use outdated names |
| No labs | You cannot learn by clicking; you must reason |
Difficulty by skill area
| Area | Weight | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business value | 35–40% | Medium | Vocabulary heavy, simple once learned |
| Microsoft AI apps and services | 35–40% | Medium to high | Many similar products to separate |
| Implementation and adoption | 20–25% | Low to medium | Common sense plus a few terms |
Who finds it hardest
Technical candidates who over-think and look for a build answer, and non-technical candidates who have never used Copilot. The first group should practise choosing the lower-effort option; the second should spend an hour using Copilot. People with no change-management background should read the adoption guide twice.
How to make it easier
- Learn the product-matching table in the cheat sheet.
- Practise scenario reading with the practice test.
- Use the exam tips to handle distractors.
- Take Microsoft’s free practice assessment as a final check.
Compared with AB-730, AB-731 is less about using features and more about decisions, so some people find it easier and some harder. See AB-731 versus AB-730.
A realistic warning
The most common reason for failing a business-level exam is overconfidence. Because there is no code and the topics sound familiar from the news, candidates skip the outline and rely on general knowledge. The exam, however, asks for Microsoft-specific distinctions: what Researcher does that Analyst does not, what Graph contributes, which licence model fits which pattern. Ten hours of reading the outline and documentation, plus a few timed practice sets, closes most of that gap.
Retake policy
If the first attempt does not go well, you can retake after 24 hours. Later attempts need 14 days between them and each attempt is paid, so treat the first attempt seriously. After a failed attempt, use the score report to see which skill areas to revise, and go back to the matching explained guide.
