AB-731 exam tips: how to gain marks
The best AB-731 exam tips are about reading: find the business need, find the constraint, and pick the answer a sensible leader would defend. The exam is 45 minutes of scenarios with plausible-sounding options, so most lost marks come from choosing an answer that is true but not the best fit. These tips cover the sitting; for preparation, start with the study plan.
Pace the 45 minutes
Microsoft does not publish the number of questions, so work in rhythm instead of arithmetic. Check the clock at the quarter marks. Answer on the first pass, flag doubtful items, and use leftover time to revisit them. Some formats, such as statement sets, may not let you go back once answered, so decide those carefully the first time.
Read for the need and the constraint
Every scenario contains one need and usually one constraint. The constraint is what separates the right answer from the merely possible one.
| Constraint in the scenario | Points toward |
|---|---|
| No developers, no code | Microsoft 365 Copilot or Copilot Studio, not a custom Foundry build |
| Answers must come from our documents | Grounding or RAG, not fine-tuning |
| Occasional or unpredictable usage | Pay-as-you-go |
| Steady, high volume at lower unit cost | Commitment tier |
| Staff have stopped using the tool | Champions, training, communications |
| Unequal outcomes for a group | Fairness |
| Nobody owns the outcome | Accountability |
| Sensitive data might leak into a tool | Approved tool, policy, data protection |
Spot the leader’s answer
This exam is for decision-makers. When two options both work, prefer the one that is lower risk, faster to value and uses what already exists. The default order is buy, then extend, then build. When an option begins with “write code” or “train a model from scratch”, it is rarely right unless the scenario demands a unique, customer-facing application.
Watch look-alike pairs
- Researcher versus Analyst. Researcher compiles research across sources; Analyst works through data files.
- Copilot Chat versus Microsoft 365 Copilot. Chat is the work-account chat experience; the full Copilot adds grounding in your work data and in-app help.
- Copilot Studio versus Foundry. Copilot Studio builds agents with low code for business teams; Foundry is the developer platform for models and custom apps.
- Fine-tuning versus RAG. Fine-tuning shapes behaviour and style; RAG supplies current facts.
- Fairness versus inclusiveness. Fairness is equal treatment; inclusiveness is design for varied abilities and backgrounds.
- Transparency versus accountability. Transparency is knowing it is AI; accountability is knowing who answers for it.
Absolute words and extremes
Options containing “always”, “never”, “guarantees” or “eliminates” are usually wrong for generative AI, which is probabilistic. Options that ban everything, or approve everything without controls, are also rarely the best answer. The balanced option with a named owner or process tends to win.
On the day
Have a personal Microsoft account ready, test your proctoring setup, and read the exam day guide. If you fail, you can retake after 24 hours; use the score report’s weak areas to guide the next few days. Try the sample questions on the evening before for a calm warm-up.
