AB-731 vs AB-730: leader or practitioner?
Take AB-731 if your job is deciding where AI goes, who owns it and how it is governed; take AB-730 if your job is using Copilot well every day. AB-731 (AI Transformation Leader) is a strategy exam about choosing and rolling out Microsoft AI. AB-730 (AI Business Professional) is a practitioner exam about prompting, drafting and analysing with generative AI. They share vocabulary, they are both 45-minute business exams that need no coding, and you can sit them in either order.
The leader view and the practitioner view
Microsoft’s own descriptions show the split. AB-731 is aimed at business decision-makers who guide transformation in a team or organisation, and expects experience of leading adoption or change management. AB-730 is aimed at people who already use generative AI productivity tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, Researcher and Analyst to improve their daily work. One certifies a decision-maker, the other a skilled user.

What only AB-731 asks
- Cost and value. Tokens as a cost driver, return-on-investment reasoning, when generative AI scales and automates well and when it does not.
- Product mapping. Which Microsoft tool fits a need: Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, Copilot in apps, Copilot Studio, or Foundry Tools. Plus build, buy or extend decisions.
- Governance. Responsible AI principles, an AI council, governance principles.
- Adoption. Adoption teams, AI champions, barriers, and licensing models (pay-as-you-go, monthly, included).
- Model and data concepts at a business level. Pretrained versus fine-tuned models, grounding, RAG, data quality.
Prompt craft appears in both, but AB-731 asks what prompt engineering changes for the business, not how to phrase a good request.
What only AB-730 asks
AB-730 goes hands-on with the Copilot experience: managing conversations, working with business documents, summarising, drafting and analysing data. If you have never used Copilot in a real task, AB-731 will teach you the concepts, but AB-730 will expose the gap.
Which one first?
| If you are | Start with |
|---|---|
| A manager, director, programme lead or transformation owner | AB-731 |
| A team member who wants to prove practical Copilot skill | AB-730 |
| Someone who administers Microsoft 365 for Copilot users | AB-900 |
| A developer or technical learner wanting AI concepts on Azure | AI-901 |
If you lead a team that is also adopting Copilot, doing AB-730 first gives you the user’s-eye view that makes AB-731 scenarios easier to judge. A leader who has felt a bad prompt fail will better understand why champions and training matter. If time is short, the exam you take should match the conversation you want to have at work: strategy, or practice.
How much overlap is there?
Expect shared ground on generative AI basics, prompts and Microsoft 365 Copilot. After that the papers diverge: AB-731 spends a quarter of its weight on governance and adoption that AB-730 barely touches. Studying for both is sensible but not a single plan. Use the AB-731 study plan and treat AB-730 as a separate project with its own outline.
For the scale of difficulty, read is AB-731 hard, and for fit with your career, is it worth it.
