AB-730: three example study profiles
For AB-730 the main question is whether your preparation matches the outline in force from October 20, 2026, which has four skill areas and a new agents and Copilot Cowork domain. The exam is 45 minutes with a passing score of 700, and the plan on this site assumes three to five hours a week. The three profiles below start from three common situations and show where the hours go.
Example profiles, not real people. The profiles below are illustrative planning examples built from the official exam outline. They are not reviews or reports of anyone’s result.
The daily Copilot user
Starting point. This candidate uses Microsoft 365 Copilot every working day. Prompts, summaries and meeting recaps are routine, so Manage prompts and chats (20 to 25 percent) and much of Manage business content and collaboration (20 to 25 percent) are already familiar.
Where the time goes. Into Understand generative AI fundamentals (25 to 30 percent), where the questions are about judgement: how context shapes an answer, how data protection limits results, and which verification step suits which risk, such as citation checks and human review. The other gap is Drive business outcomes by using agents (20 to 25 percent): prebuilt versus custom agents, and Cowork skills, plans and scheduled tasks.
The trap. Mistaking fluent use for exam vocabulary. Questions name features exactly, so look-alike pairs such as Copilot Chat versus an agent, or a notebook versus a page, are where daily users drop marks.
Suggested order. The free practice assessment first, then agents and Cowork, then fundamentals and responsible AI.
Planning assumption. The study plan says two weeks is usually enough for this profile, so a reasonable planning assumption is six to ten hours in total, with half on agents and Cowork.
The candidate holding materials for the older outline
Starting point. This candidate prepared with a course or notes from before October 20, 2026. They know prompts, conversations, drafting documents and meetings, but their material has three skill areas.
Where the time goes. The change log is the guide: prompts and chats and business content were reworked, and Drive business outcomes by using agents is entirely new. Work IQ, connectors, memory and instructions, Notebooks, Facilitator, real-time catchup and intelligent recap deserve a fresh read, and Cowork has no older equivalent.
The trap. Two traps, in fact. Old percentages no longer apply, and the old agents objective in the prompts area was removed, so time spent on building custom agents is better moved to choosing between a prebuilt and a custom agent, which is now examined.
Suggested order. Agents and Cowork, then the reworked prompts and chats group, then meetings and content, with fundamentals as a quick check.
Planning assumption. Three weeks at three to five hours, about nine to 15 hours, roughly half on the new agents domain and the changed groups.
The newcomer to Microsoft 365 apps and AI tools
Starting point. This candidate rarely uses Excel or PowerPoint, has seldom joined Teams meetings with recaps, and has barely used a chat assistant for work. The prerequisites self-check would give two or more “no” answers.
Where the time goes. First into app basics, because Copilot questions assume you can tell what a good Excel table or short deck looks like. After that the hours follow the weights, with fundamentals (25 to 30 percent) getting the largest share and the three practical areas dividing the rest equally.
The trap. Studying features from reading alone. Without a licence, hands-on access is limited, so the free practice assessment and the exam sandbox matter more here, and Teams meeting features are easy to skip.
Suggested order. App basics, fundamentals, prompts and chats, content and meetings, then agents and Cowork.
Planning assumption. The prerequisites page suggests five weeks instead of four; at three to five hours a week that is about 15 to 25 hours.
AB-730 profiles side by side
| Profile | Front-loaded domains | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Copilot user | Fundamentals, agents and Cowork | Confusing everyday use with exact feature names |
| Older-outline materials | Agents and Cowork, reworked prompts and meetings | Relying on old percentages and objectives |
| Newcomer | App basics, then fundamentals | Learning features without hands-on access |
How to check which AB-730 profile fits before booking
Open the exam format to confirm which outline applies on your exam date, then take the free sample questions and list the domain of each miss. If most misses are in agents and Cowork, you are the second profile; if they are about risks and verification, the first; if you cannot picture the features at all, the third. Follow the four-week study plan and finish with the 20-question practice test. If your work is closer to leading adoption than using Copilot, compare with AB-731 via AB-730 versus AB-731.
These hour counts are planning assumptions, not guidance from Microsoft, and they do not guarantee a pass.
