AB-730 renewal and retake rules
Microsoft’s AB-730 certification page does not state whether Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional expires, and that is the open question on this page. The retake rules, by contrast, are fixed: wait 24 hours after a first failed attempt, then 14 days between later attempts, with a maximum of five attempts in 12 months, paying each time. The English exam also changes on October 20, 2026. Everything below was read on Microsoft Learn on 2026-10-09; the sources are the certification page, the retake policy and the renewal FAQ.
Why AB-730 expiry is unconfirmed
Microsoft’s expiration policy has two relevant statements: associate, expert and specialty certifications are valid for one year and renew through a free assessment, while fundamentals certifications do not expire. AB-730 is labelled Beginner on its page. Nothing on that page, or in the study guide, calls it a fundamentals or an associate certification, and neither says “this certification does not expire” or “renew this certification annually”. The study guide’s link table repeats the general renewal sentence about associate, expert and specialty certifications, but that is a standard row, not a ruling on this credential.
So the position of this guide is: not confirmed. A third-party site may tell you either way; the reliable check is the certification entry in your own Microsoft Learn profile after you pass, where an expiry date is shown or absent. Hold off on any plan that depends on a permanent badge until you see that. If the profile shows a “Renew” button, the mechanism below applies.
What annual renewal would look like, if your profile offers it
For credentials that do expire, Microsoft describes one path only:
- The renewal assessment is free, online, unproctored and open book.
- It opens six months before the expiry date; it cannot be taken earlier.
- Passing extends the certification by one year from the expiry date.
- Retakes are unlimited: the second try can follow immediately, after that wait at least 24 hours.
- Renewal cannot be done by retaking the exam or passing a beta exam.
- If the certification expires, it can no longer be renewed and must be earned again by passing the exam.
These renewal rules are the same across Microsoft; what is specific to AB-730 is that the page does not tell you whether they apply. Each sibling credential, such as AB-731 or AB-900, has its own page and its own answer. See also the exam format for the facts that are published.
Retake rules for the AB-730 exam itself
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| First attempt failed | Wait 24 hours |
| Second and later failures | 14 days between attempts, up to 5 |
| Attempt cap | 5 attempts per exam within 12 months of the first attempt; after five failures, eligible again 12 months from the first attempt |
| Fee | A new fee each attempt, if the exam has one; AB-730 is priced per country at booking |
| Already passed | Cannot retake unless the certification has expired |
| Waiver of the wait | Only after connectivity or equipment failure with a Pearson VUE case number |
Practical effect: a candidate who fails twice has used up more than two weeks of calendar time, so book the second attempt only after a gap analysis. A wait-period waiver is granted for no other reason than the technical one in the table. The free practice assessment on Microsoft Learn costs nothing, unlike a retake; the study plan shows where to use it.
The October 20, 2026 outline change and your attempt count
The English exam changes to four skill areas on October 20, 2026, with a new agents and Copilot Cowork area. The retake policy page does not mention outline changes, so this guide assumes that attempts counted before and after that date belong to the same exam code and the same 12-month window; Microsoft does not say so in as many words. If you fail on the old outline, you will meet the new one on your next attempt, so study to the new skills outline before booking, and do not rely on question memories from the first sitting. Localised exams update about eight weeks after English.
Accommodations and booking records
Microsoft says accommodation requests need advance approval before scheduling, and the process can take up to 10 business days. For an exam not offered in your language, the study guide allows a request for an extra 30 minutes. Book with a personal Microsoft account: exam records tied to a work or school account are lost if you leave the organisation and cannot be recovered.
