AB-730 prerequisites: what you need first
AB-730 has no formal prerequisites: Microsoft lists no required certification, degree or job role, and you do not need to write code. Its audience profile does, however, describe someone who already uses generative AI tools and the core Microsoft 365 apps, so some experience is assumed by the questions. This page lists that background and how to fill gaps before you start the study plan.
What Microsoft says
The audience profile describes a candidate who has experience with generative AI-powered productivity tools, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Cowork and prebuilt agents, and who uses AI to improve daily work and make informed business decisions. You should have experience with elements such as prompt engineering, context engineering and large language models, and with Copilot tools such as notebooks and pages. You are expected to be comfortable with Outlook, Word, Teams, PowerPoint and Excel, and with common business tasks: drafting emails, building presentations, generating images and managing documents. No coding is expected.
The background that helps
Core Microsoft 365 apps
You should be able to use the five named apps without looking for basic buttons. If you rarely touch Excel or PowerPoint, spend an evening in each: create a table and a chart, build a short deck. Copilot questions assume you know what a good result looks like in each app.
Everyday generative AI
Have you written prompts? If not, spend a few days using a chat assistant for real tasks. Notice that the quality of the answer follows the quality of your instructions and your context. Learn three terms:
| Term | Plain meaning |
|---|---|
| Prompt | The instruction you give the AI |
| Large language model | The model that generates the text response |
| Grounding or context | The information the AI uses to answer, such as your files |
Responsible AI basics
Know that AI can be wrong while sounding certain, that hidden instructions in content can manipulate it, and that people can over-trust it. If those ideas are new, start with the fundamentals guide.
Meetings and teamwork in Teams
Three of the meeting features in the outline run inside Teams. If you seldom use Teams meetings, join a few and look at the recap and notes.
What you do not need
- No programming, scripting or app building.
- No Azure or administrator knowledge; that is the territory of AB-900.
- No strategy or governance experience; leadership topics belong to AB-731.
- No Copilot licence strictly required to study, though hands-on access helps.
A quick self-check
You are ready to start if you can say yes to most of these:
- I can build a table and chart in Excel and a short deck in PowerPoint.
- I have used a chat-based AI assistant for real work.
- I know why an AI answer must be checked.
- I can find a past meeting recap in Teams.
If you answered no to two or more, take a week to close those gaps first and plan five weeks in total instead of four.
