Is AB-730 worth it? Who should take it
AB-730 is worth taking if you use Microsoft 365 daily and want an independent, recognised way to show that you use Copilot and agents effectively and carefully. It is less useful as a route into a technical career, because it deliberately tests no coding, administration or architecture. Microsoft publishes no salary or job-outcome data for it, so judge it on the skills it proves and the effort it takes.
What the certification shows
Microsoft describes the credential as for people who use generative AI productivity tools and core Microsoft 365 apps to improve business outcomes and decision-making. In practice it signals that you can:
- explain, at a business level, how Copilot works with your organisation’s data and what the risks are;
- write, refine, save, schedule and share prompts, and manage chats and notebooks;
- draft and analyse business content across Microsoft 365 apps and check it against goals;
- use meeting and collaboration features;
- pick and apply prebuilt agents and delegate tasks to Copilot Cowork.
Who benefits most
| Person | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Office professionals in any function | Builds structured skills in a tool you already use |
| Team leads and analysts | Shows you can use AI with sensible checks |
| People preparing for an AI-aware workplace | A beginner-level, no-code entry point |
| Teams rolling out Copilot | A shared baseline and vocabulary |
Who should look elsewhere
- Administrators of Copilot: consider AB-900.
- Decision-makers guiding AI strategy: consider AB-731; see the AB-730 versus AB-731 comparison.
- Builders of AI solutions: the exam deliberately excludes this.
What it costs
The price is set per country or region and shown at booking; the official page gives no fixed figure. See certification costs. The main cost is time: two to five weeks of part-time study, depending on experience.
Does it expire?
The exam page does not state an expiry for this certification. Microsoft’s renewal page says annual renewal applies to associate, expert and specialty certifications and that fundamentals certifications do not expire. Because this credential is listed at beginner level but not described as a fundamentals certification on its page, check the expiry shown in your Microsoft Learn profile after you pass.
Limits of the certification
It proves knowledge of how to use a set of tools as Microsoft describes them. It does not prove you will produce good work, and the tools change fast. The outline itself changes on October 20, 2026, which is a reminder that the credential reflects a moment in a moving field.
How to decide
- Do you use Microsoft 365 Copilot or plan to?
- Does your employer or role value a recognised credential?
- Can you spend a few evenings a week for a month?
If yes to all three, it is a reasonable investment. If your goal is administration or strategy, choose a different exam first.
