Is AB-730 hard? Exam difficulty explained
AB-730 is one of the easier Microsoft exams on paper: it is a beginner-level exam with no coding and a 45-minute limit. It is not trivial, because it asks about exact Copilot features and about judgement, and because part of the outline is recent. If you use Microsoft 365 Copilot every day and read the study guide, expect a manageable exam; if you have only tried a chat assistant, expect to need real preparation.
What makes it easier
- No technical depth. Microsoft expects no coding, no administration, no architecture.
- Short scenarios. Most questions describe a user and a goal.
- A published, bullet-level outline. Every objective lists its skills.
- Free practice. There is an official practice assessment and sandbox.
- Familiar apps. The apps involved are the ones most office workers use.
What makes it harder
Look-alike features
Saved, scheduled and shared prompts. Notebooks, pages and chats. Catchup and recap. Prebuilt and custom. The exam rewards recognising which feature does exactly what the scenario needs.
Recent product areas
The agents and Cowork domain is new from October 20, 2026. Microsoft Copilot Cowork and the idea of skills are recent, so books and videos made a few months ago may not include them. If you have not used these, plan extra time.
Judgement questions
In fundamentals, there is often more than one plausible answer, and the correct one is the check that best fits the risk. Candidates who treat AI as an oracle lose marks here.
Product names change
Copilot features are renamed and moved. Check the current study guide rather than screenshots.
The clock
Forty-five minutes with an unpublished question count rewards steady pace.
Who will find it easy
- Daily Copilot users in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.
- People who already write detailed prompts and verify results.
- Candidates who have taken another Microsoft fundamentals exam, because the format is familiar.
Who may struggle
- People who have never used Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- Candidates who study from older material.
- Those who confuse administration with use; this is a user exam, not AB-900.
How to judge your own difficulty
Take the free practice assessment cold. A result near the pass line means a short plan will do. A low result with unfamiliar vocabulary means you should follow the full four-week study plan and spend time in the product.
Is the passing score hard?
700 of 1000 is a scaled score, not 70%. Microsoft does not publish how many questions you need right. Aim for 80% on realistic practice questions.
Pass rate
Microsoft does not publish pass rates for this exam, so any figure you see online is a guess.
A realistic effort
Experienced users usually need around two weeks of part-time study; newcomers around four to five. See the exam tips and the practice test to calibrate.
