AB-620 renewal and retake rules
The AI Agent Builder Associate earned with AB-620 is valid for one year. Microsoft’s credential expiration policy counts that year from the date all requirements are completed, and renewal is a free, unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn that opens six months before the expiry date. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours before the second attempt and 14 days between later ones.
Timeline from pass to expiry
| Point in time | What Microsoft states |
|---|---|
| Day 0, exam passed | The certification is valid for one year |
| About month 6 | The renewal assessment becomes available; reminder emails go out if your Learn profile has an email address and you agreed to communications |
| Months 6 to 12 | Take the assessment any time; passing extends the certification one year from the expiration date |
| After expiry | You cannot renew; the certification must be earned again by passing the exam |
Passing early does not shorten anything: the extension is counted from the existing expiration date, not from the day you passed. Expiry dates and times are in UTC, which matters if you leave the assessment to the last evening. Microsoft’s renewal page and its FAQ both recommend finishing well before the deadline.
What the renewal assessment is, and is not
The assessment is free, open book and online. Microsoft says it focuses on recent technology updates and takes about 45 minutes. It is aligned with certification exam updates and offered in the same languages as the exam.
The retake rules for the assessment differ sharply from the exam:
- There is no limit on attempts.
- If you fail, you can try again immediately.
- After the second try, wait at least 24 hours between attempts.
The only route is the assessment. The FAQ states that retaking the exam, or passing a beta exam, does not renew a certification and that there are “no exceptions”. Microsoft also notes that the questions may have been drafted with AI but are reviewed by subject matter experts.
Why a Copilot Studio credential needs the renewal more than most
Microsoft gives the reason for annual expiry as keeping skills current with evolving technology. For AB-620 that is not abstract. The exam outline includes MCP tools, the A2A protocol, computer use and Fabric data agents, and the exam page notes that commonly used preview features can appear. The study guide itself shows signs of movement: its description line says “Integrated AI Agent Solutions” while its title says “Integrated AI Solutions”. Because the renewal assessment follows exam updates, the content you are asked about in year two may differ noticeably from year one. Watch the exam changes page and the study guide for revisions.
Retaking AB-620 after a fail
Microsoft’s retake policy for role-based exams reads:
- Fail once: wait 24 hours.
- Every later attempt (up to five): wait 14 days.
- No more than five attempts in 12 months from the first attempt. After five failures you can sit it again 12 months after the date of the first attempt.
- A retake costs a new exam fee, where a fee applies. The fee is set per country or region and is shown at booking.
- A passed exam cannot be retaken unless the certification has expired.
A waiver of the waiting period exists only for internet or equipment failure during the exam where a Pearson VUE case was created; the case number must accompany the request. No other reason qualifies. The AB-620 exam format page covers delivery, language and the extra 30 minutes available when your language is missing. Microsoft’s exam page also mentions an Exam Replay offer, but its terms are not stated there, so check the offer page for current conditions.
Rules Microsoft does not state for this exam
- The exam fee is not listed on the certification page; only “price based on the country or region” appears.
- Microsoft does not publish a retirement or replacement date for AB-620. If a certification is retired, the FAQ says renewal reminders are suppressed and the renewal window can be shortened, with Learn telling you to renew before the retirement date.
- No separate rule applies to this credential. Everything above is Microsoft’s general policy for associate, expert and specialty certifications.
What differs from other Microsoft credentials
Fundamentals credentials such as AB-900 do not expire. Associate-level credentials such as AB-620 do. An expert credential that requires an associate does not lapse automatically when the associate does; each is renewed separately. For the job-market side, see what AB-620 leads to, and for budgeting, the certification costs page.
