Is AB-620 hard? Copilot Studio exam difficulty

AB-620 is harder than most people expect from a low-code exam, and the difficulty is breadth rather than depth. Nothing on it is conceptually difficult. There is simply a lot of it, spread across Copilot Studio, the Power Platform, Foundry, Azure and two protocols that barely existed a short while ago.

The people who find it hard are not the ones who struggle with any single topic. They are the ones who know Copilot Studio well and have never touched solutions, or who know the Power Platform well and have never configured MCP.

What makes it hard

The assumed knowledge list is long. Power Fx, Dataverse, Power Platform environments, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Foundry, adaptive cards, plus intermediate generative AI including RAG, orchestration, MCP and A2A. Microsoft expects all of that before the syllabus starts. See the prerequisites.

“Low-code” is misleading. You will meet REST APIs, custom connectors, HTTP requests, protocols and lifecycle management. The absence of a programming language does not make this a simple exam — it makes it an integration exam.

The newest material has the least written about it. MCP, A2A, computer use and Fabric data agents are all recent. There is no official Microsoft practice assessment yet — Microsoft states it is “not currently available” and that these usually arrive within eight weeks of an exam leaving beta. You are preparing from the skills outline and product documentation more than from courses.

It moves. Copilot Studio ships changes constantly, and Microsoft notes that commonly used preview features can appear. Material six months old may describe a different product surface.

What makes it easier

Only three domains. Planning, integration, testing and management. That is a simple structure to plan around and an unambiguous score report.

The largest domain is a decision table. Integration is 40–45%, and most of it reduces to matching a requirement to a mechanism. Once you can say what each of connectors, custom connectors, REST APIs, MCP, computer use, Fabric data agents, Foundry integration and A2A is for, a large share of the exam answers itself.

The smallest domain is the easiest. Test and manage is 20–25% and it is standard Power Platform ALM — solutions, environment variables, pipelines — plus test sets. An afternoon of work covers it.

No code to write. You interpret and configure; you do not produce working code under time pressure.

What catches people out

• Choosing computer use too eagerly. It is the answer only when there is no API and no connector. If a connector exists, the connector wins.
• Confusing the three ways to bring in another agent. Inside Copilot Studio → integrate an existing agent. Your own code-first agent → Foundry integration. Someone else’s, elsewhere → A2A.
• Knowledge source versus tool. Knowing something versus doing something. Wrong answers routinely offer the other one.
• Skipping ALM. A fifth of the exam, frequently unstudied, and trivially learnable.
• Forgetting human-in-the-loop. Any consequential or irreversible action wants an approval step, not a carefully worded instruction.
• Identity. If a scenario says users must only see what they are permitted to see, the agent must act on behalf of the user rather than as a service identity.

A quick self-assessment

You are ready to start studying if you can say yes to most of these:

• I have built a Copilot Studio agent with a knowledge source and a tool.
• I know what a Power Platform solution and an environment are.
• I can read a Power Fx expression.
• I know what a REST API is and roughly how a connector wraps one.
• I could explain RAG to a colleague.

Three or more nos means spend a week building before you start revising.

The verdict

Middling difficulty for an associate exam, and very passable in four focused weeks if you already work in Copilot Studio. The risk is not that any topic defeats you; it is running out of time to touch everything, and then meeting a question about the one mechanism you never configured.
