AB-100 renewal and retake rules
The Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert credential is valid for one year and renews free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, but the key AB-100 quirk is that its associate prerequisite does not renew along with it. Microsoft’s FAQ says an expert certification does not automatically expire when the associate prerequisite expires, and that each certification must be renewed separately. If you fail the exam itself, you wait 24 hours before the second attempt and 14 days between later ones. Everything below is taken from Microsoft Learn pages checked on October 9, 2026. See also what AB-100 leads to.
Two credentials, two clocks
Earning the architect credential means holding two certifications: the one AB-100 completes and one associate certification from the prerequisite list. Each has its own one-year expiry, counted from the date you completed all requirements for that certification. Microsoft’s expiration policy states this for all role-based associate and expert certifications.
The FAQ answers the prerequisite question directly: the expert-level credential does not automatically expire if the associate expires. It does not say what the expert credential looks like on your profile in that situation, nor whether Microsoft re-checks the prerequisite later, so this guide cannot promise anything more. Keep both current, and treat the associate renewal as a separate calendar entry.
The renewal window for this credential
| Step | Rule (Microsoft Learn) |
|---|---|
| Window opens | Six months before expiry; no earlier renewal is possible |
| Cost | Free |
| Format | Online, unproctored, open book, about 45 minutes |
| Attempts | No limit; second attempt immediately, then at least 24 hours between later attempts |
| Result | Expiry extended by one year from the previous expiry date |
| Other routes | None; passing a beta exam or retaking the exam does not renew |
Microsoft says the renewal assessment is aligned with exam updates and appears in the same languages as the exam. That matters here because the English AB-100 exam is updated on October 14, 2026, so a renewal assessment taken after that date reflects the new outline, including the move to Microsoft Foundry and Foundry Tools naming described on the exam format page.
Microsoft also notes that renewal is offered for certifications that have been available for more than six months. AB-100 is a recent credential, and the exact date your first renewal opens is shown on your Learn profile under Certifications, not on a public schedule. This guide cannot give you that date.
What happens if you let it lapse
After expiry you can no longer renew. Microsoft’s policy states that you must re-earn the certification by passing all required exams. For the architect credential that means AB-100 again. Whether an expired associate prerequisite must also be re-earned is not stated on the pages reviewed; check the certification page when you apply.
Retaking the AB-100 exam
The retake policy applies to role-based, specialty and fundamentals exams alike:
- After a first fail, wait 24 hours.
- Wait 14 days between all later attempts, up to five attempts.
- No more than five attempts within 12 months of the first attempt. After five failures you can try again 12 months after the first attempt.
- A passed exam cannot be retaken unless the certification has expired.
- Each retake is paid for where a fee applies; AB-100’s price is set by country and not published as a single figure.
A waiver of the waiting period exists only if internet or equipment failure occurred during the exam and a Pearson VUE case was opened; the case number is required. See certification costs for fees and exam day for the booking steps.
Same as the other Microsoft exams, and what is specific
The one-year validity, the window, the retake waits and the free assessment are the same for every Microsoft associate, expert and specialty exam. Fundamentals certifications never expire. What is specific to AB-100 is the double dependency: an exam score is not enough to hold the credential, so the associate side has to stay valid too if you want to show both. Also specific is the speed of change in the subject matter. Copilot Studio, MCP and agent features move quickly, so Microsoft says renewal assessments focus on recent updates, so expect them to test changes rather than basics.
