AB-100 prerequisites: what you need first
You can book the AB-100 exam without holding any other certification, but you cannot earn the Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert credential from it alone. Microsoft requires you to pass AB-100 and also to earn at least one qualifying associate-level certification. The order does not matter for the exam itself, only for when the credential is awarded.
Qualifying associate certifications
Microsoft’s certification page lists these associate-level routes. Each is itself an exam you must pass:
| Exam | Certification (descriptive) |
|---|---|
| AB-620 | AI Agent Builder Associate |
| AI-103 | Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate |
| AI-300 | Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate |
| AB-210 | Dynamics 365 Sales AI Consultant Associate |
| AB-250 | Dynamics 365 Contact Center AI Engineer Associate |
| AB-410 | Intelligent Applications Builder Associate |
| PL-400 | Power Platform Developer Associate |
| MB-230 | Dynamics 365 Customer Service Functional Consultant Associate |
| MB-310 | Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant Associate |
| MB-330 | Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Associate |
| MB-500 | Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate |
| MB-800 | Dynamics 365 Business Central Functional Consultant Associate |
| MB-820 | Dynamics 365 Business Central Developer Associate |
The exam page for AB-100 also names MB-280 (Dynamics 365 Customer Experience Analyst Associate) and PL-200 (Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate), while the certification page does not list them at the time of writing. Check the current certification page before you rely on either as your prerequisite.
On this site, AB-620 and AI-103 are the two prerequisite routes with full guides. They suit different people: AB-620 for Copilot Studio and Power Platform builders, AI-103 for Python developers building agents on Foundry.
What Microsoft assumes you know
The audience profile describes an accomplished solution architect. Practically, that means:
- Comfort with core Dynamics 365 products, Power Platform, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Foundry Tools and Foundry Models.
- Experience with agents built in Copilot Studio, with AI prompts and with Microsoft Foundry, plus working knowledge of several language models.
- Familiarity with the open protocols Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP).
- Understanding of responsible AI, including the Microsoft Responsible AI Standard.
- Security awareness: data residency, access control, audit trails and defending against prompt manipulation.
- The ability to build an ROI case for an AI solution.
That is a wide net. Nobody is expert in all of it, and the exam asks you to choose and justify, not configure.
Which prerequisite should you pick
- Pick the one that matches your current work. If you already hold a Dynamics 365 or Power Platform associate certification, you have your prerequisite.
- If you have none, pick the nearest. A Copilot Studio builder should look at AB-620. A Python developer should look at AI-103.
- Sequence matters little. Studying the associate exam first is useful practice, because much of the vocabulary overlaps, but you may also take AB-100 first.
Renewal covers the expert certificate
Microsoft’s study guide says associate, expert and specialty certifications expire annually and renew through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Keep your associate certification current as well, in case the requirement is checked.
What you do not need
- No coding for the exam itself. It is architectural.
- No specific Azure certification such as AZ-104 or AZ-305.
- No data science background.
Once you know your route, read the exam format and the study plan.
