Is 200-901 worth it? Who should take it
200-901 is worth it if you want a recognised credential that you can combine network knowledge with code: you automate networks, write against Cisco APIs, or move from network operations towards software and DevOps practice. It is less worth it if your job is purely hands-on switching and routing, where the CCNA fits better, or purely application development with no Cisco platforms involved.
What the certification proves
Cisco describes the exam as testing software development and design, understanding and using APIs, application deployment and security, and infrastructure and automation on Cisco platforms. Cisco states no prerequisites, and the certification is valid for three years. Cisco does not publish salary figures in the pages used for this guide, so this guide gives none.
Who it is for
Network engineers who want to automate. If you run networks and spend your days on repetitive changes, the exam gives structure to Python, REST, Git and Ansible, and shows you the APIs of the platforms you already use.
Developers working with Cisco products. If your code calls Meraki, Catalyst Center, Webex or ACI, domain 3 is directly useful, and the networking domain fills the gaps.
Systems administrators and DevOps staff. Containers, CI/CD, Dockerfiles, bash and infrastructure as code are part of the blueprint, so people from a general operations background can use it to enter Cisco-centred work.
Students and career changers. With no prerequisites, it is an accessible way to show that you can both read code and understand networks, provided you accept that it is an exam, not work experience.
Who should pick something else
| If you | Consider instead |
|---|---|
| Need to configure and troubleshoot switches and routers | CCNA 200-301 |
| Want vendor-neutral networking basics first | Network+ N10-009 |
| Build on Azure rather than Cisco | AZ-104 |
| Want security fundamentals | Security+ SY0-801 |
Costs and effort
The exam fee is 300 USD at the time of writing, with Cisco Learning Credits accepted. Four weeks of part-time study is realistic for someone with some scripting experience; see the study plan. Compare fees in the certification costs overview. Recertification after three years is by retaking the exam, passing a higher Cisco exam or earning 30 continuing education credits.
A fair assessment
The credential will not substitute for demonstrable work: a GitHub repository with a script that lists devices from a sandbox is a stronger signal than a badge alone. But the exam forces you to cover Git, REST, containers and YAML systematically, which many people only half-learn on the job. If those are the skills you want, it is a good structure. The renamed certification also keeps the exam content familiar, so older DevNet material remains mostly relevant.
