CCNA 200-301 study resources
The best CCNA resources are Cisco’s exam topics document, a network simulator you configure every day, and practice questions that point to your weak domain. Cisco’s own exam page lists guided learning paths on Cisco U, instructor-led training, practice exams, a free trial of Cisco Modeling Labs and community support through the Cisco Learning Network. Treat the topics document as the checklist, because the exam changed substantially between v1.1 and v2.0.
Start with the official material
The exam page. Cisco’s CCNA exam page (cisco.com) gives the title, duration, price and languages, and links to the exam topics.
The exam topics document. Cisco publishes the v2.0 topics as a PDF (200-301 CCNA v2.0 exam topics). It runs to three pages. Read it first, and again halfway through. Cisco notes that topics are a general guide and may change without notice, so re-check it before you book.
The v1.1 topics. If your booking is still for v1.1, the Cisco Learning Network hosts that list too (CCNA v1.1 exam topics). It has six domains instead of five.
Cisco U. and instructor-led training. Cisco’s exam page lists guided learning paths on Cisco U. and instructor-led courses. Use them for structure if you like a course; they are not required.
Cisco Learning Network. A community site where candidates discuss topics and ask questions.
Lab tools
| Tool | Use |
|---|---|
| Cisco Packet Tracer | Free simulator for VLAN, STP, OSPF, ACL and NAT labs |
| Cisco Modeling Labs | Runs real network operating system images; the Cisco exam page mentions a free trial |
| A Linux machine with Ansible | For the automation objective |
Verify the current terms for each tool on Cisco’s site, since licences and trials change.
Six labs that cover the exam
- Subnet a network. Split a /24 into VLSM subnets for four departments and two point-to-point links, then configure them and ping across.
- Layer 2 design. Three switches, two VLANs, an 802.1Q trunk, an LACP bundle, a chosen root bridge, PortFast and BPDU guard. Break the native VLAN and read the logs.
- OSPF and a floating route. Four routers in area 0, DR/BDR election with priorities, and a backup floating static default route.
- NAT and ACLs. PAT on an edge router, an extended ACL that blocks one service from one subnet, and a named ACL on the VTY lines.
- Layer 2 security. DHCP snooping, dynamic ARP inspection and port security with each violation mode.
- Automate. An Ansible inventory and a playbook that changes a banner on three devices. Add syslog and SNMP monitoring, then read the messages by severity.
Practice questions
Use the free 20-question test and the five sample questions on this site to find your weak domain early. Realistic practice questions are most useful when they explain every wrong option; avoid braindumps, which teach memorising instead of troubleshooting and are not a legitimate way to prepare.
What to avoid
Courses and books written for the 2020 to 2024 blueprint lack the v2.0 additions: AI and prompt design, infrastructure as code, DNS record troubleshooting, and the heavier focus on diagnosing problems from output. Use older material for concepts, and fill the gaps from the current topics document.
